Hong Kong filmmaker Stanley Kwan feels that Chinese cinema has dealt with questions of gender and sexuality more frankly and more provocatively than any other national cinema. Keeping with its mission of presenting essential Asian cinema, AMA's Showcase will explore Kwan's claim with two weeks of regional premieres and recent filmic events from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China.
AMA's tantalizing selection of sexualities will feature representations of gay and lesbian life, coming-of-age adventures, contemporary tales of adult, alienated experience (with, admittedly, a post-modern chill), and the exuberant heroics of transgendered swords(wo)men!
In a rare North American screening, Tsai Ming-liang's The River, a winner at last year's Berlin Film Festival, will open the series. Also under consideration are Lin Cheng-Sheng's festival-acclaimed story of lesbian teens, Murmur of Youth and the controversial, banned-at-home East Palace, West Palace, the first depiction of contemporary gay life from Mainland China, directed by Zhang Yuan.
The series will be complemented by Oak Street Cinema's exclusive week-long run of Wong Kar-wai's acclaimed Happy Together. This film, winner of Best Director at last year's Cannes Film Festival and atop many Best of '97 lists, will play at Oak Street April 10 - 16. Call Kate Steger at 331-7563 for details.
"Sexuality in Chinese Film" will run from April 4 - April 17, with multiple shows running nightly. All shows (except Happy Together, at Oak Street) will be presented at Metropolitan State University - St Paul, in the Auditorium.
